Berkeley is the story of Ben Sweet (Nick Roth), an eighteen-year-old middleclass boy who comes to UC Berkeley in 1968 to study accounting and avoid the draft. There he begins an odyssey through sex, drugs, rock and roll, and political activism, which turns his conservative world upside down, and leaves him on a path of exploration and self-discovery.
With the help of Professor Hawkins (Bonnie Bedelia), Ben tries to focus his passion into writing, specifically poetry, much to the chagrin of his father, Sy (Henry Winkler – The Waterboy, Happy Days).
His studies soon take a backseat to the exciting world of the Vietnam War era, which is introduced to him by such influences as Sadie (Laura Jordan) a drably-dressed egghead who seduces Ben on their first walk home from class, Henry (Jake Newton) a childhood pal who has become a Marxist, Alice (Sarah Carter) the daughter of Berkeley’s Dean who uses Bens new found radicalism as a way to antagonize her father, and Blue (Tom Morello of the rock band Rage Against the Machine) Bens roommate and band mate who turns out to be an embittered Vietnam War vet.
