Perkins on Point: April 17, 2009
For most Americans it has been a taxing week. Actually make that three and a half taxing months. The annual tax freedom day, as calculated by The Tax Foundation, was April 13th, two days before the April 15th deadline for filing our federal tax returns. In other words, the average American has been working since January 1st just to pay their tax bill.
Of course when you start to add up the Presidents proposed bloated federal budget, the stim u lie (thats plural for multiple stimulus packages) and the bailout bills look for that tax freedom day to move toward the summer months.
The growing realization of the mounting tax burden sparked a grass roots movement this week that is one of the largest, most widespread, to sweep across the nation in years.
Echoing the frustration of the early patriots who filled Boston Harbor with 342 chests of British tea in December of 1773, hundreds of Tea Parties took place in cities and towns across the nation saying enough is enough.
Ironically, the original tea party was not just about taxes, it was also about the British parliaments bail out of the East India Company at the expense of the colonists.
As the Preacher said, there is nothing new under the sun.
Many pundits and politicians were dismissive of the rallies saying either they were organized by national groups or it was simply a bunch of scary, angry anti-government people. I dont know about scary, but I would say a lot of Americans are angry about the arrogant attitude of elected officials who throw around the hard earned dollars of Americans as if it were nothing more than monopoly money. As for being organized by national groups, I hope they keep thinking that, because theyll be really surprised where this might lead. National groups like FRC promoted the events, but it was organized by hardworking citizens whove had enough.
Could the rallies that were held across the nation be a sign that something more than a little anti-tax sentiment is brewing? Could the sons and daughters of those who won our freedoms be coming to a realization that it is up to them to maintain those freedoms?
